Is it necessary to keep your wallet in the front pocket in New York City?

People’s advice for going to New York always seems to be to keep my wallet in my front pocket instead of the back as I’m used to. Are pick-pockets really that big a risk? I tend to wear tight pants and I can’t fit my wallet in my front pocket.

New York City is fairly safe, but it is as safe as any other big city, it can be overwhelming the first time you visit, but you’ll get the hang of it.

I usually do not take a lot of cash and I do keep my wallet on the front pocket. I also use a Money Belt when I’m in NYC (I live in New Jersey)

However I do the same go to other big cities in Europe and in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Personally, I never had a problem in New York, but I had a close encounter in Newark. NYC is not what you used to see in the 70’s, it is really a nice place to go and have a good time.
